Challenge:

PlantGro Inc. is a full-service plant fertilizer company. The company’s special niche has been working with organic plant growers. However, with the company expanding its operations, it needed to explore non-organic growers in the region. The company chose Surveyonics for its versatile survey features such as Conjoint Analysis, a marketing statistical technique.

Input Concerns:

PlantGro’s goal behind surveying prospective growers is to find out what matters to them. Through the survey questions, the concern is to ask pointed questions. In designing the questions, the following should be clear: Will the survey questions ask for an answer for one dimension of value? What values do the prospective clients wish to see in products? Will the questions be too ambiguous? The key to reduce ambiguity is to make sure that questions have mutually exclusive options.

Output Concerns:

PlantGro’s main output concern was how to analyze prospective client responses. In designing the survey, clients are given a number of attributes for each fertilizer brand carried by the company. From the answers to the survey questions, how clients arrive at their preferences is analyzed. This would shed light on how the company can approach these clients with their brand offerings.

Solution:

Surveyonics created the ideal survey for PlantGro to explore potential clients in their competitive industry. The survey was designed in such a way that ten questions on a single paper. After sending out the survey to clients, data was encoded and analyzed. Answers to specific questions were analyzed to reveal client preferences. Data analysis results were organized in both report and presentation charts. Clients were assured that survey answers would be strictly confidential which increased the validity of their answers.

Result:

PlantGro’s survey was completed by 120 growers (a response rate of 25%). The survey answers provided much needed information on what growers expect from a fertilizer company. Open-ended and closed questions about service quality, product quality, shipping convenience, and customer satisfaction were given in the results. PlantGro executives were pleased with Surveyonics’ survey and were able to:

  • Promote their products to clients by emphasizing convenient shipping (a concern for 63% of respondents) and 24-hour customer service (a concern for 48% of respondents).

  • Offer initial complimentary deals to prospective clients to gain their business as part of their marketing strategy.
